Designated Assisted Living
Designated Assisted Living (DAL) is a living option for individuals and couples with private personal living space, personal care and the freedom to maintain their independence as well as their connections with family, friends and community.
Designated Assisted Living provides the security of 24-hour care based on the needs of the individual or couple. It fills the gap between living in one’s own home with intermittent support and living in a nursing home with 24-hour nursing coverage.
Level 4 is a Designated Assisted Living option that provides access to a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) and Personal Care Aides on a 24-hour basis.

Aspen and Birch Cottages
These cottages provide a Designated Assisted Living Level 4 (DAL4) option for people who can make decisions, be responsible for themselves, but need extra support with the activities of daily living and are unable to have their needs met at home.
There is access to Personal Care Aides on a 24-hour basis as well as daily access to a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) from 0700h to 2200h, supported by an on-call professional RN services provided by Home Care 24 hours per day.
Eligibility
Admission to DAL4 is determined by the Health Region Placement Process based on health, residential, and personal care needs. The criteria for eligibility is:
- meets the criteria for the Home Care Program
- requires residential-based observation and supervision for safety and security 24 hours per day
- requires frequent assistance with personal care supports
- is the most appropriate housing and care setting available
Waitlists and placement are coordinated by the Health Region and The Bethany Group.
Fee
The resident pays the set accommodation fee and is responsible for any medications, personal care supplies and equipment (e.g. walkers, wheelchairs, bed alarms, etc.) There is no charge for professional health or personal care services.
If required, subsidies are available through the enhanced Alberta Seniors Benefit or through AISH (Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped) www.seniors.gov.ab.ca

Professional Health Services
A variety of professional care services/supports are delivered by the

The Health Care Team monitors the needs of each resident and adjusts his/her Care Plan. If care needs can no longer be met in DAL, the Case Coordinator will work with the resident and family to transfer to a more appropriate care setting.
Personal Care Services
Based on the resident’s needs, a variety of personal care supports are delivered by on-site staff. These supports may include assistance with bathing, dressing, simple wound care, medication assistance, etc.
Eden Philosophy
The Bethany Group has adopted the Eden Alternative as the guiding philosophy in our residential care settings. This philosophy provides guidance on how we can help people to continue to live meaningful lives when they can no longer live independently. It supports an environment that addresses the three "plagues" of loneliness, helplessness and boredom and creates a place where residents want to live, families want to visit, and staff wants to work.
Roles and Responsibilities
The resident is responsible for:
- Input into his/her own Care Plan
- payment of housing and residential support costs
- the ability to participate in the daily and social activities of a group setting acknowledging the possibility of a move to a higher level care setting, if needed
Family members/friends/guardians are responsible for:
- providing transportation for appointments and personal outings (e.g. doctor, dentist, entertainment, etc.)
- assisting in management of personal finances, if needed
- supporting resident’s social and emotional well-being
- assisting with any transfer to a higher level care setting, if required
- communicating with Home Care and/or The Bethany Group to assist and support the resident with his/her Care Plan, if required.

Faith House
Faith House is a Designated Assisted Living Level 3 (DAL3) facility that serves 20 residents. It is a secure facility designed to meet the special care needs of older adults who are physically quite well but have developed memory problems that mean they require ongoing assistance and support.
In Faith House there is access to Personal Care Aides on a 24-hour basis.
Eligibility
Admission to DAL3 is determined by the Health Region Placement Process based on health, residential, and personal care needs. The criteria for eligibility is:
- meets the criteria for the Home CareProgram
- requires residential-based observation and supervision for safety and security 24 hours per day
- requires scheduled assistance with personal care supports
- is the most appropriate housing and care setting available
- must be ambulatory
Waitlists and placement are coordinated by the Health Region and The Bethany Group.

Viewpoint
Viewpoint is a Designated Assisted Living Level 3 (DAL3) facility that serves 20 residents. It is designed to meet the needs of younger, disabled adults. Residents are able to make their own decisions, but require significant amounts of physical care.
In Viewpoint there is access to Personal Care Aides on a 24-hour basis.
